How to pack for a trip to Taiwan and what to expect
Nice seeing you again!
The weather in Taiwan is rather unpredictable due to geological reasons. Sometimes it would drizzle a bit, other times the rain may pour on for hours or even days. Therefore, it would be safe to pack an umbrella or a raincoat before your departure.
Since Taiwan is a subtropical island, there are mosquitoes. Their activities peak during the summer time (roughly around June to September), so be sure to pack light colored clothes, preferably white, during summer. For people who love to hike, be sure to pack a pair of pants (or trousers).
Summer time is also the typhoon season, so be sure to check the weather reports.
Taiwan is humid and hot during summer and fall. It is vital to stay hydrated and protect yourselves from the sun. This is especially true for the Southern parts, though not as humid as the Northern parts of the island. So pack yourselves a bottle and sunscreen/ sunblock of your choice!
At public places, train stations and libraries, you can refill your bottle for free. Faucets are not an ideal place to refill your bottle. Drinking fountains, on the other hand, are checked and the water is safe to drink from. At these places, however, refill in bulk is considered to be a crime.
In short, be sure to pack for these things:
1) an umbrella or a raincoat
2) light colored clothes
3) a pair of trousers
4) an empty bottle to refill your water with
5) any protection from the sun (hat, sunscreen, sunblock, etc.)
[Regulations]
In public, there are designated places where you can charge your electronic devices (both free and paid are available), but outside of these places charging is forbidden. Charging, using sockets in public places, without permission may face legal issues. The voltage is mostly 110 V, 60 Hz.
For smokers, unfortunately, smoking inside any public buildings, transport, and parks are not allowed.
People should beware not to drink, eat (chewing things included) or smoke when traveling by metro in Taipei and Kaohsiung. On the other hand, drinking and eating on island-wide trains and High Speed Rail are acceptable.
Hope you enjoy your trip to Taiwan.
Until next time!
